CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
Junior catcher Dan Moylan went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and four RBI, leading North Carolina (31-9, 5-8 ACC) to an 8-2 win over Maryland (13-23, 0-10 ACC) in ACC baseball action tonight at Boshamer Stadium. The game marked the first of a three-game conference series between the two schools.
Sophomore outfielder Matt Swope got the Terps on the board when he doubled home junior outfielder Brian Patenaude in the top of the first inning. In the top of the third inning, Swope scored on a single by senior first baseman Craig Munroe to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Tar Heels got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when junior first baseman Ryan Earey scored on a ground out by Moylan. That cut the lead to 2-1.
Maryland senior starting pitcher Joe Hart went 6.0 innings, surrendering just one run on four hits and struck out three batters. When he was replaced by freshman Jared Stuart to start the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tar Heels blew the game open. After the first three batters of the innings reached base, Moylan drilled a bases-clearing double to put North Carolina up 4-2.
In the eighth inning, North Carolina picked up four more runs. Freshman second baseman Chad Prosser singled home a run. He then stole second base, advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly. After Moylan lined a two-out single, senior shortstop Clay Hooper drilled a two-run home run to put the Tar Heels up 8-2.
North Carolina junior lefthander Ryan Snare (7-1) pitched a complete game, surrendering just two runs on seven hits to pick up the win. He held the Terps scoreless the final six innings of the game. Stuart (1-1) got the loss.
Swope and Munroe led the Terps with two hits each.
Maryland and North Carolina continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m., but was moved up because of the weather forecast, which is calling for rain late Saturday.
TERP NOTES: Patenaude's 18-game hitting streak came to an end, as did junior third baseman Steve Oursler's 13-game hitting streak ... Swope now has a five-game hitting streak.
