COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's golf team will play in its third event of the spring season as it travels to the Campbell University Invitational, with play in the two-day event beginning on April 3. The tournament will be held at the Keith Hills Country Club (Par 72, 5949 yards) in Buies Creek, N.C. The Terps will compete against 10 teams including the host team Campbell, Appalachian State, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Eastern Kentucky, Ohio, Penn State and Troy State. The tournament tees off Monday and continues through Tuesday.
Staying With The Same Lineup
Maryland will play in the Campbell University invitational with one junior, one sophomore and three freshmen - the same lineup the Terps have utilized through the first two tournaments of its first ever traditional spring season. Junior captain Sarah Bedford (Montgomery Village, Md.) and sophomore Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) lead the way with a trio of freshmen: Erin Clasper (N. Potomac, Md.), Carter Crowther (Kilmarnock, Va.) and Jennifer Gibson (Havertown, Pa.), rounding out one of the youngest lineups in the ACC.
Terps Shoot Best Team Score At Snowbird
Maryland achieved its second-best team finish (tied for seventh) and best two-round tournament score (630) at the Northern Illinois Snowbird Invitational in Tampa, Fla., on March 16 and 17. The Terps' seventh-place team finish rivaled its fourth place finish at the Great Smokies Championship (Oct. 25-26, 1999) while its 630 team score was its best by 17 strokes, which they achieved at the Great Smokies.
Clasper Among Top ACC Golfers
Freshman Erin Clasper shot a career-low 72 in the second round of the Snowbird Invitational. She became the first golfer in school history to shoot par with her score and finished tied for sixth in the event with a two-round total of 150 (six over par). She is one of seven golfers in the ACC to have shot par or better during the spring season. Clasper's 77.50 stroke average is the 10th best average in the ACC this season.
Gibson Ties Career Low Round
Freshman Jennifer Gibson shot a career-low tying 77 in the second round of the Snowbird Invitational on March 17. Her score tied her low of 77 which she shot during the second and third rounds of the Nittany Lion Fall Invitational on Oct. 3 and 4, 1999. Gibson has now shot four rounds in the 70's during her career. She tied for the team lead with three rounds in the 70's during the 1999 fall season.
Bedford Coming Into Form
Junior Sarah Bedford enjoyed her best two-round tournament performance of her Maryland career as she shot a 175 during the Snowbird Invitational. She tied her spring season best score with an 85 in the second round of the event. Bedford improved her overall score by five strokes and her individual finish by 21 places during the Snowbird Invitational when compared to the Carolina's Collegiate on Feb. 28-29.
Four Named to Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll
Freshmen Carter Crowther, Jennifer Gibson, Lori Koch (Baltimore, Md.) and Holly Thornton (Delran, N.J.) were all named to the University of Maryland Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll for their academic performances during the fall semester in 1999. To achieve scholar-athlete status, a student-athlete must achieve a 3.0 GPA or better during the previous academic semester.
