WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Senior lefthander Jamie Hammond pitched the first complete game of his career, leading Maryland to a 4-2 upset of No. 10 Wake Forest in baseball action on Sunday at Hooks Stadium. With the win, the Terps take two out of three games from the Deacons, marking the first time ever that they have taken a three-game series from Wake Forest since the ACC switched to a three-game conference format in 1990.
Hammond (4-7) surrendered just two runs, one of which was unearned, scattered six hits, struck out six batters and issued no walks. He also threw a career-high 131 pitches.
Craig Munroe doubled home a pair of runs of the top of the first inning to give Maryland a quick 2-0 lead. Wake Forest got a run back in the bottom of the second inning when Carlos Brackley singled home Dan Conway. The Deacons then took advantage of a pair of Terp miscues in the bottom of the third inning to tie the score at 2-2.
After four scoreless innings, Brian Patenaude hit a one-out triple to right field which drove home Sean Lomas from first base in the top of the eighth inning. He then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Swope to put the Terps up 4-2.
Hammond held the Deacons in check the final two innings, striking out three of the final four batters. Wake Forest starter Ryan Braun (2-2), who struck out a career-high six batters, took the loss.
Maryland returns home to face James Madison on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
