COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland senior Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) shot a one-under par in his first 18 holes at the Wofford Invitational on Friday afternoon at Carolina Country Club, and scorched the 6,794-yard course with a four-under par 68 in his second trek around the par-72 track to command a two-stroke lead heading into Saturday's final round. Three Terrapin golfers have combined to shoot five rounds of par, or better, as Maryland boasts a four-stroke lead in team standings after 36 holes.
Maryland (579, +3) leads Augusta State (583, +7) and Virginia, both tied for second. After 36 holes, they are the only contenders as fourth-place UNC Charlotte sits at +20 entering Saturday's competition.
Unikel (71-68--139, -5), who has led the Maryland golf team in each of its last three events and who won the Furman Intercollegiate three weeks ago, leads three other sub-par golfers among the leaders, and three more including teammate Gary Mankulish (Laurel, Md.) who are tied for fifth, even at par. Unikel's second round of 68 was the low round of the tournament. It was his third 68 in the last three weeks, and his sixth sub-par round out of eight in his last three tournaments.
Mankulish (72-72--144, E) shot par in consecutive rounds on Friday to tie for fifth. Terp freshman John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) rebounded from a first round of 77 to shoot par on his second 18 and tie for 17th at five-over. Sophomore Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) is just one stroke behind Moheyer, tied for 21st. Vertti Iso-Ahola is 44th at +13.
