COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's golf team, which has finished in the top 10 in both of its last two tournaments, closes out its regular season in the James Madison University Lady Duke Invitational on April 8-9. The tournament will be held at the Lakeview Country Club (par 72, 5806 yards) in Harrisonburg, Va. The two-round event will mark the Terps' fourth and final event of their first-ever traditional spring season. The team will close out its season in the ACC championships meet in Clemmons, N.C., at the Salem Glen Country Club. Maryland will play in the JMU invitational with one junior (Sarah Bedford), one sophomore (Brooke Bendler) and three freshmen (Eric Clasper, Carter Crowther and Jennifer Gibson) - the same lineup the Terps have utilized through the first three tournaments.
Clasper Is The Top Terp
Freshman Erin Clasper (N. Potomac, Md.) has finished as the top individual Terp golfer in all three of Maryland's tournaments this spring. Her best finish came in the Northern Illinois Snowbird Invitational (March 16-17) where she posted a sixth-place (tie) finish with a six-over-par 150 score for the two-round tournament. Clasper finished in a tie for 20th place in the Fighting Camel Classic (April 3-4) and in a tie for 31st place in the Carolina's Collegiate Classic (Feb. 28-29). She is averaging a team-leading 79.16 strokes per round and shot a school-record low 72 (par) in the second round of the Snowbird Intercollegiate.
Gibson Shows Most Improvement
Freshman Jennifer Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) continued her improvement this season as she carded a 171 two-day total at the Fighting Camel Invitational. She finished in a tie for 38th place in the event. Gibson is averaging 81.50 strokes per round in the last two tournaments (four rounds) after averaging 92.50 strokes per round at the Carolina's Collegiate Classic, the Terps' first event of the season. Gibson has shot four consecutive rounds under 86 and totaled 155 (78-77) at the Northern Illinois Snowbird Invitational.
Crowther Among Top Terp Finishers Freshman Carter Crowther (Kilmarnock, Va.) finished third among Maryland's golfers at the Fighting Camel Invitational with a two-day total of 173. She has now finished among the Terps' top three golfers in each of the team's three events this season. Crowther recorded her top finish of second place at the Carolina's Collegiate Classic and placed third at both the Snowbird Intercollegiate and the Fighting Camel. Only Erin Clapser, who has been Maryland's top finisher in all three tournaments has, a better aggregate average than Crowther.
Bedford Continues To Lower Scores
Junior Sarah Bedford (Montgomery Village, Md.) has shot four rounds in the 80's this spring and has scored three consecutive rounds in the 80's over the course of the last two events. She posted a 177 (89-88) in the Fighting Camel Invitational to mark the first tournament during which both of her scores were in the 80's. Bedford had a season-best 85 in the second round of both the Carolina's Collegiate Classic Snowbird Invitational and the Fighting Camel Invitational.
Bendler Staying Consistent
Sophomore Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) shot a season-best 82 in the first round of the Snowbird Intercollegiate and is averaging 85.66 strokes per round through the first three tournaments of the spring. Bendler and her teammates all had scores in the 80's in each round of the Fighting Camel Invitational to mark the first time every player carded scores under 90 in ever round during a single tournament this season.
