COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland, the defending national field hockey champion, begins its title defense against NCAA Tournament semifinalist Connecticut on Aug. 26 and will play nine regular season games against 1999 NCAA Tournament participants on its 2000 schedule which was released today by head coach Missy Meharg. In addition to hosting the Huskies, the Terps will play host to Old Dominion (Sept. 3), Massachusetts (Sept. 16), Duke (Oct. 8), James Madison (Oct. 20) and North Carolina (Oct. 22) in one of their most challenging home schedules in recent memory.
"We are really excited about our 2000 schedule," said Meharg. "Not only will it prove to be one of the toughest in the nation, but it will challenge us to reach many of the goals that we annually set for our team. We have set the bar high for Maryland hockey and feel that to be the best you have to play the best."
The Terps will also host the 17th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament on Nov. 2, 3 and 5 on the Artificial Turf Field. It marks the fourth time that the Terps will host the ACC Tournament, most recently in 1995.
The ACC schedule brings two conference games to College Park. Duke and North Carolina, both of whom played in the 1999 NCAA Tournament, renew their rivalries with the Terps in College Park while Maryland travels to play at Virginia (Oct. 1) and Wake Forest (Sept. 23).
The Terps' non-conference schedule includes home games against Stanford (Oct. 6), Ohio (Aug. 28) and the University of Richmond (Oct. 29). Maryland will also play host to the fifth annual Terrapin Invitational (Sept. 16 and 17). Maryland will play Massachusetts on Sept. 16 and Radford on Sept. 17.
Maryland will travel to play traditional powers Delaware (Sept. 8), Princeton (Sept. 29) and Rutgers (Oct. 11), and will play the second game of a home-and-home series against Old Dominion (Oct. 15).
