Harrisonburg, Va. - Junior Sarah Bedford (Montgomery Village, Md.) and freshman Carter Crowther (Kilmarnock, Va.) shot team-leading nine-over par 80's to lead the Maryland women's golf team in the first round of the rain-shortened James Madison University women's golf invitational at the Lakeview Country Club here Saturday. Only six of the 12 teams completed the first round before the rains came. The remaining six teams are scheduled to finish the first round and all teams will play the second round on Sunday.
Maryland is currently in third place among the six teams who finished play with a team score of 323. The Terps' 323 team score is their third-best score of the spring and best since shooting a 312 in the second round of the Northern Illinois Snowbird Invitational on March 17.
Bedford led the Terps with a career-best round of 80. Her previous best round was an 85 during the second round of the Snowbird Invitational on March 17. Crowther matched Bedford with an 80 of her own -- marking the third time she had shot 80 or below this spring.
Freshman Erin Clasper (N. Potomac, Md.) shot an 81 and was followed by sophomore Brooke Bendler (Salisbury, Md.) who shot an 82. Clasper has shot 81 or below in five of seven rounds this spring while Bendler matched her season low score.
