
Georgia Tech Holds Off Maryland Baseball Team 8-5

Freshman catcher Tyler Parker drilled a three-run home run and knocked in four runs, as Georgia Tech (25-8, 9-2 ACC) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held off Maryland (10-21, 0-8 ACC) 8-5 in ACC baseball action on Saturday at Shipley Field. The game marked the second of a three-game weekend series between the schools.
Junior first baseman Derek Goffnia singled home a run in the first inning and sophomore second baseman Richard Lewis knocked in a run on a single in the second inning, putting the Yellow Jackets up 2-0. With his hit, Lewis extended his career-high hitting streak to 23 games.
In the top of the fourth inning, Georgia Tech scored four times to extend the lead to 6-0. Parker provided the big blow with his three-run home run to center field.
Parker struck again in the top of the seventh inning when he doubled home a run. Sophomore center fielder Wes Rynders singled home a run in the same inning to extend the lead to 8-0.
Maryland got a run back when junior shortstop Sean Lomas singled home a run in the bottom of the seventh. Brian Patenaude, who extended his career-high hitting streak to 14 games, scored on a ground out in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the score 8-2.
The Terps got to within 8-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning, senior right fielder Frank Valois, who went 2-for-5 on the day, doubled home a pair of runs. Junior designated hitter Chuck Easter followed with a RBI single. Georgia Tech however, sent in junior relief pitcher Andy Matthews who got the save.
Sophomore righthander Rhett Parrot (4-2) got the win while junior righthander Mark Martin took the loss. Matthews' save was his third of the season.
Maryland and Georgia Tech conclude their series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
