
Current And Former Terps Field Hockey Players To Lead U.S. Team

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Current University of Maryland field hockey All-American Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) and former Terp All-Americans Christine DeBow (West Chester, Pa.) and Katie Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) are members of the U.S. National Team which will travel to the Netherlands for a series of games against top Dutch club teams from May 16-28.
The U.S. will take on Division 3 Club Team Qui Vive on May 18, Division II team SCHC on May 19, Division I member PUSH on May 20, Division I member PINOKE on May 24, Division II COOI SCHE on May 24 and Division II BREDA on May 25. The team may also schedule a game with Olympic Qualifying Tournament champions and Champions Trophy participant New Zealand during the tour. The Champions Trophy competition, featuring Argentina, Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, New Zealand and South Africa, is scheduled for May 26-June 4 in Amstelveen, The Netherlands.
DeBow and Kauffman are two of the nine players on this team that participated in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in March. The team placed sixth at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and did not qualify for the Sydney Games.
DeBow, who has earned 53 International Caps, has been a member of the U.S. National team since 1997. She played on Maryland's 1995 NCAA national runner-up team and was a three-time All-America selection (1995, '96, '97). She was named to the USA Junior National Team in 1997 and earned a bronze medal at 1997 Junior Pan American Championships.
Kauffman, who has earned 91 International Caps, is in her sixth year on the national team. She played on Maryland's 1993 NCAA national championship team and was an assistant coach on the Terps' 1999 NCAA championship team. The 1996 Honda Broderick Award finalist was one of only two U.S. players to start all seven games at the 1999 Pan American Games.
Tagliente, who was a member of the U.S. Pan American Games team which qualified for next year's Pan American championships, is a returning starter for Maryland's 2000 team which is expected to compete for the national championship. She was an All-America first team selection in 1999 and is Maryland's fourth all-time leading scorer with 139 total career points. Tagliente was a member of Maryland's 1999 national championship team.
The Terps won the Division I national championship and finished with a 24-1 overall record during the 1999 season. The Terps set school records for wins in a single season (24), fewest losses in a single season (one) and consecutive victories (22). Maryland won the ACC title with a perfect 4-0 record during the regular season and was 2-0 in winning the conference tournament championship.
