Colorado Springs, Colo. - Sixty-nine of the nation's most promising field hockey athletes, including junior Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.) and newcomer Catherine Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) of the reigning NCAA champion Maryland Terrapins, have kept alive their hopes for spots on the 2001 U.S. National and Junior National Teams with selections to U.S. Field Hockey's A Camp.
Scheduled for Dec. 27-31, 2000 and Jan. 2-6, 2001, A Camp represents the final leg in earning a spot on one of the U.S. National Teams. At A Camp, U.S. Field Hockey will select the U.S. National Team, the U.S. Under-18 Team and U.S. Under-21 Team. Athletes advanced to A Camp based on performances at B Camp held July 26-30 at Penn State University.
Senkler, a midfielder/back on the Terps' squad, scored two goals and added an assist during 1999's national and ACC championship run. The junior physiology and neurobiology major is a member of the NFGCA National All-Academic team and joined 10 of her teammates and 181 total Maryland student-athletes on the 1999-2000 ACC Honor Roll. In high school in 1996, Senkler was a member of the U.S. Under-16 team.
Freshman Rogers is a versatile forward/midfielder who will join the Terps when they report to fall camp on August 13. The newcomer was a member of the U.S. Under-19 team and attended the national A Camp once before, during her senior year in high school.
Senior team selections will advance directly to the second week of A Camp and join current National Team members, selections from the United Airlines Field Hockey League and selected players from the 2000 National Hockey Festival in tryouts for spots on the 2001 U.S. National Team. Athletes under 21 years of age will participate in the first week of A Camp for spots on the Under-18 and Under-21 teams. Based on performances during the first week of A Camp, top athletes may earn invitations to the second week and a chance to compete for spots on the National Team.
In 2001, the U.S. National Team is tentatively scheduled for competition at the inaugural Americas Cup tournament in Jamaica, FIH World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France and the FIH Champions Challenge in India. The U.S. 2001 Under-21 Team will compete in the FIH Junior World Cup in Buenos Aires.
