Sept. 13, 2000
TOWSON, Md. - Maryland junior All-American Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) netted four goals and the Maryland defense was more suffocating than the warm temperature as the No. 1 Maryland field hockey squad (5-0) defeated Towson on the turf at Minnegan Stadium. Walter's quartet of scores and eight points were career-highs, as the backfield unit of seniors Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Lindsay Gorewitz (Rockville, Md.), juniors Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.), Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.) and Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) and sophomore Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md.) limited Towson to one goal on two shots. The victory was the 27th in a row for the reigning national champs.
Maryland opened the scoring 16 minutes into the game when All-American Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Md.) fed junior Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md.) in front of the cage. Exactly four minutes later, Honda Broderick hopeful Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) bounced a shot past Towson keeper Betsy Crossman from 15 yards out to put the Terps up, 2-0. The Terps continued firing as the half went on, with Walter scoring her first goal of the day with 5:10 remaining.
Towson saw a bright spot with 18:55 left in the second half, as sophomore midfielder Sarah Perkins set up Jessie Buchheim for the Tigers' lone goal to cut the Terp lead to 3-1. It was all Terps for the rest of the match, as they answered five minutes later on a penalty corner when Smith hammered one home from Welsh and senior All-American Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia). Walter closed out the match with an incredible three-goal flurry. The first came from Simon following a penalty corner situation at 6:55. The All-American then slapped a goal just under the crossbar at 5:55 again from Simon, and ripped an unassisted score with 54 seconds remaining to make the final 7-1.
Maryland juniors Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.), Jackie Reilly (Suffern, N.Y.) and Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) split time in goal to collect the victory. Hohnstine stopped the Tigers' only shot in the first half, while Towson goalie Betsy Crossman finished with 20 saves.
The Terrapins next return home for a pair of games at the Artificial Turf Facility. The Terps meet No. 12 Massachusetts on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. There will be a players' clinic following the match. The Terps meet the Radford Highlanders on Sunday at 2 p.m.
