No. 23 Women's Soccer Falls To No. 19 Santa Clara, 4-2

STANFORD, Calif. - Despite the first two college goals by freshman Katie Ludwig (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) the No. 23 Maryland women's soccer team lost to No. 19 Santa Clara, 4-2, in the opening game of the Stanford Nike Invitational.
In an offensive battle, Santa Clara quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Kathleen Celio's goal just 4:33 into the match.
Ludwig retaliated just 36 seconds later as she took a pass from senior Julie Nelson (McLean, Va.) and scored to tie the game at one at the 5:09 mark.
The Broncos recaptured the lead on a goal by Megan Horvath at the 29:16 mark.
But again, Ludwig came back with a goal to tie the score. Ludwig took a cross from Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.) and beat the Santa Clara keeper to tie the game at the 30:59 mark to make it 2-2 heading to halftime.
Santa Clara took the lead for good with a goal by Veronica Zepeda just 6:14 into the second half at the 51:54 of the match, making it 3-2.
The Broncos added an insurance goal off the foot of Rachel Weber at the 53:34 mark to take the 4-2 victory.
California native Riki-Ann Serrins (Mission Viejo, Calif.) made five saves in the return to her homestate.
Maryland, which fell to 4-3-0, faces host No. 6 Stanford on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. (PT)
