COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 ranked Maryland field hockey squad (7-1) plays the second and third of three consecutive away matches when the Terps meet No. 11 Princeton and No. 8 Virginia this week. The Terps and unbeaten Tigers clash on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at Princeton's Class of 1952 Stadium. Maryland meets the ACC rival-Cavaliers on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m.
The reigning national champion Terrapins are coming off their first loss in over a year, dropping a 5-3 decision to No. 6 Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons and Terrapins traded goals for much of a tightly contested and evenly played match, with Wake emerging the victor. Maryland had defeated Wake in each of the previous six meetings, including a 2-1 double-overtime contest in 1999's ACC championship game.
Despite the defeat, Maryland's three-time All-American and Honda award hopeful Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) reached a tremendous milestone. The senior tri-captain notched a goal and dished out an assist for three points, giving her a 167 career point total. That mark is Maryland's new all-time career point best, as Tagliente passed Lisa Buente's previous high of 165, set between 1987 and 1990.

Tagliente Breaks Career Points Record
With a goal and an assist for three points vs. Wake Forest, midfielder Carla Tagliente took over the top spot on Maryland's point scoring chart, establishing a new all-time record of 167 points. The previous career mark was 165, set by Lisa Buente from 1987-1990.
Three-time All-American Tagliente entered the 2000 season in fourth place all-time with 139 points. With a team-second 12 goals and team-fourth four assists, the senior tri-captain has amassed a team-second 28 total points, to give her 167 for her career. Her career high of 19 goals came as a freshman, with top seasons in assists (19) and points (55) coming a season ago as a junior.
Tagliente is also within striking distance of Buente's career goals record of 70. The midfielder adds 12 scores on the season to her three-year total of 54 for 66 in her career, just four shy of the record.
Win Streak Concludes At 29 Games
Maryland's loss to No. 6 Wake Forest brings to an end the Terps' school-record 29 game win streak. The streak began on Sept. 10, 1999, with a 6-3 victory over local rival UMBC. The Terps previous loss was over a year ago, when the Terps were beaten 5-3 by Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. on Sept. 6. The second-longest win streak in Terp field hockey history was obliterated by the 29-gamer. That streak came during a 13-game tear in the Terrapins' 1993 national championship season.
Scouting Princeton: Tiger Tales
Maryland faces another undefeated, ranked opponent on the road in No. 11 Princeton this week. The Terps meet the Tigers on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Class of 1952 Stadium.
The Tigers (5-0) are coming off a two-win week, beating Columbia 3-1 on Sept. 20 before shutting out Dartmouth, 5-0. Senior forward Hilary Matson recorded a hat trick as the Tigers rolled over the Big Green. The Marathon, N.Y., native and high school teammate of Terp Carla Tagliente leads Princeton with six season goals and six assists for 18 points. Freshman forward Claire Miller and sophomore back Emily Townsend have four and three goals for the Tigers, respectively. Sophomore keeper Kelly Baril has three shut outs in five games and a 0.60 goals against average, ranking her fourth in the national statistics.
Thirteen-year head coach Beth Bozman guides the six-time defending Ivy champion Tigers. She has established a career record of 150-59-6, and the Tigers have made appearances in the national semifinals three of the past four years. Bozman served as the president of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) until this past January.
The Terps possess a 3-4-1 record vs. Princeton in the all-time series. Maryland defeated the Tigers, 8-2, on Oct. 15 of last season in College Park. Princeton handed the Terps a 1-0 loss during the 1998 season in a meeting at the Tigers' home campus.
Scouting UVa: Cavalier Chatter
Maryland faces its second ACC opponent of the season in No. 8 Virginia (3-3) on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. at the University Hall Turf Field in Charlottesville. UVa is coming off a pair of losses to No. 3 North Carolina and No. 2 Old Dominion, but plays No. 9 William & Mary before facing the Terrapins. A complete scouting report will be available on the official web site of Maryland athletics, www.umterps.com, following that match.
Terps At A Glance
Maryland's combination of the top scoring offense in the nation and a top-20 defense (according to Sept. 19's national statistics release) has helped the Terrapins to its strong 7-1 record and No. 1 ranking. The Terp offense, led by All-Americans Carla Tagliente, Rachel Hiskins (Victoria, Australia), Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) and Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) has overwhelmed opponents with 54 goals on 246 shot attempts, while Maryland's defense anchored by seniors Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.), Lindsay Gorewitz (Rockville, Md.) and junior Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) has limited foes to 14 goals on 52 attempts.
Meanwhile, Maryland's junior stalwart goalkeeper Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) has protected the Terp cage with a 1.54 goals against average and a .676 save percentage. Maryland's savior made a career high seven stops vs. No. 6 Wake Forest.
Hiskins Topping The Charts
Senior All-American Rachel Hiskins has brought the creative style of play honed in her home state of Victoria, Australia, to new heights so far in the 2000 season. Hiskins paces the Terps in scoring (33 points), goals (13) and is tied for the team-lead in assists (7) and game-winning goals (2). She also has an incredible .520 shot percentage. In the 1999 season, the defensive midfielder established the Maryland single-season points record, exploding for 67 points in 25 matches after tallying six during her sophomore campaign. With 33 points in only eight games this season, Hiskins seems to be on pace to set a new standard in 2000.
Rizzo Makes Her Mark
Maryland junior Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) netted her first goal of the 2000 season against Wake Forest, finishing an endline pass from Carla Tagliente. The forward recorded an assist vs. Ohio on Aug. 28 and now has three points on the season.
Meharg Approaching Milestone
Maryland's seven victories this season has propelled Terp head coach Missy Meharg's career slate to 195-69-9. Meharg is only five victories away from the 200 win plateau, and is currently 17th all-time in collegiate field hockey in wins. The Terp mentor would move into 16th place with two more victories, passing her college coach at Delaware, Mary Ann Hitchens, who amassed a 196-76-33 career record. The Terps have won more than 15 games each season since 1990.
