COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former University of Maryland football standout and current Baltimore Raven Jermaine Lewis returned a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown in Super Bowl XXXV tonight in Tampa, Fla. The Ravens won the first Super Bowl in its' franchise's young history, 34-7.
Lewis answered the New York Giants' first (and ultimately only) score of the game -- a 97-yard kickoff return by Ron Dixon -- with his own return down the right sideline. The score gave the Ravens a 24-7 lead late in the third quarter.
A five-year National Football League veteran, Lewis is Maryland's all-time leading receiver in receptions (193) and yardage (2,932). He was also the Terrapins all-time leader in all-purpose yards (3,950) prior to the 2000 season, but that record fell at the hands of TB LaMont Jordan.
Lewis played for Maryland from 1992-95 and is one of two former Terrapins in this year's Super Bowl. Fellow Raven Larry Webster (Terp DT, 1988-91) is the other.
