COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Maryland volleyball team (8-8, 4-4 ACC) can make a move up the ACC standings with three home matches on slate at Ritchie Coliseum this week. The Terps begin the week Tuesday (Oct. 16) against NC State begininng at 7 p.m. Over the weekend, the Terps host Florida State on Saturday (Oct. 20) and North Carolina on Sunday (Oct. 21). Both weekend matches are set to begin at 5 p.m.
* The Terrapins enjoyed mixed results this past weekend, just missing a two-game road sweep. The Terps lost a hard-fought five-game match at Georgia Tech on Friday but rebounded in impressive fashion to shutout Clemson in three games. It was the second straight match that Maryland swept the Tigers dating back to last season's 3-0 shutout at the ACC Championships.
* The four conference victories for the Terps this season tie the four wins the Terps had all of last season. The Terps had just five ACC wins in 1999 and 1998 and with two more wins the team will have the most ACC wins since 1997 when the Terps went a perfect 16-0. The Terps also finished with a perfect ACC slate in 1996 by also finishing 16-0.
News And Notes On The Wolfpack
* The Terps and Wolfpack square off for the second time this season and the 43rd meeting all-time Tuesday night at Ritchie. NC State downed Maryland earlier this season in four games in Raleigh.
* The win over the Terps is the only conference win of the year for State as the Wolfpack enter Tuesday's match with a 5-11 overall mark and an 1-7 ACC slate.
* Maryland head coach Janice Kruger is 22-4 all-time during her 14 seasons in College Park vs. the Wolfpack. First-year head coach Mary Byrne is 1-0 during her tenure at State against the Terps.
* Both coaches have one thing in common: they are both graduates of Nebraska. Kruger is a 1977 graduate while Byrne finished her degree from NU in 1985.
The Latest On The Seminoles
* FSU is 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the ACC to begin the week. The Seminoles travel to Virginia on Friday before facing the Terps on Saturday. FSU has won five of their last seven matches including a 3-2 ACC mark during the stretch.
* The Terps topped FSU in five games earlier this season on the road at Tallahassee to improve their overall series lead to 12-7.
* Saturday's game is also a matchup of two coaches with the longest active tenures at their respective schools. FSU's Dr. Cecile Reynaud has coached all 25 years of her career at FSU while Janice Kruger is in her 14th season with the Terps. Kruger owns an impressive 16-5 career coaching record vs. Reynaud and the 'Noles.
* Leading the FSU attack in 2001 has been middle hitter Norisha Campbell. Campbell leads the team in kills (255), hitting percentage (.349) and total blocks (79).
The Inside Scoop On No. 25 North Carolina
* North Carolina begins the week on top of the ACC with a perfect 8-0 mark and an equally impressive 16-3 overall mark. The Tar Heels are the only ACC team ranked in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches' Top 25 poll, coming in at No. 25.
* The Tar Heels have been dominant in ACC play, dropping just five games all season. The Tar Heels have swept four ACC foes including the Terps on Sept. 21 in Chapel Hill.
* The only three teams to top the Tar Heels this season include Penn State, UC Santa Barbara and Santa Clara.
* Janice Kruger is 12-15 all-time vs. the Heels while Maryland as a team is 16-23 against Carolina.
* Nicole Reis is the team's top hitter, racking up 287 kills in 19 matches. Reis also is among the team leaders in digs with 191, which place her third.
A Balanced Attack Leads The Way For The Terps
* Maryland has four players in triple-figures with kills including two players with over 200 kills. Both junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) and sophomore outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) rank 1-2 on the team in kills.
* Brennan's 206 kills rank first on the team as she also leads the Terps in attempts (540) and digs (175). Brennan led the team in kills last season and finished second on the team as a freshman in the same catagory. Earlier in the season, Brennan totaled a season-high 20 kills in the FSU victory.
* DiLivio trails Brennan for the team lead in kills by one with 205. In her first season as a regular, DiLivio has performed extremely well and has developed into one of the team's top players.
* Sophomore right side Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) is third on the team with 170 kills and leads the team in service aces with 30. As a freshman, Jones led the entire ACC with 45 service winners. In the team's last match at Clemson, Jones led the way with a match-high 14 kills to pace the Terrapin attack.
* Senior middle hitter Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.) is fourth on the team with 166 kills. In her first season as a starter, Dority leads the ACC with an impressive .353 hitting percentage.
Davey A Steady Force At Setter
* Junior Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) has been very consistent at setter for the Terps this season. After leading the team in assists last year, Davey has picked up where she left off by leading the team with 672 assists.
* The only match that Davey has not started over the past two seasons was the NC State match earlier in the year. Davey still felt the effects of a sprained ankle she suffered vs. North Carolina the night before.
Down The Stretch They Come!
* With the ACC beginning this week the second meeting between all schools, the Terps have just two home matches remaining on the schedule. After this week, home dates with Clemson (Nov. 9) and Senior Day vs. Georgia Tech (Nov. 10) remain while three road matches at UVa, Wake Forest and Duke.
* The 2001 ACC Championships are also one month away. The 2001 championships will be held Nov. 15-18 on the campus of Florida State University.
