COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Splitting last week with a 10-0 victory over Rutgers and a 1-0 overtime loss to new No. 1 Old Dominion, the Maryland field hockey squad (11-3, 2-1 ACC) dipped to No. 2 in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll, released Tuesday. With a total of three victories over teams in the NFHCA top 10 and a 6-3 record against the top 20, the Terrapins relinquish the top-spot for the first time since being voted third in the Sept. 11, 2001 poll.
All five ACC field hockey schools rank in the top 20, with this week's opponent, North Carolina (10-3) listed fifth. The Terrapins already defeated No. 3 Wake Forest (8-3), who achieved its highest ranking in the coaches' poll this week. Virginia (9-4) edged the Terps in triple-overtime on Sept. 30 and has been ranked eighth since, while Duke (8-5) came in at a season-low 14th.
With one of the toughest schedules in the nation, Maryland plays a total of 11 regular season matches against teams listed in this week's top 20. Maryland meets the No. 17 James Madison Dukes on Oct. 26 in Harrisonburg, Va., after No. 5 North Carolina and Delaware (RV).
Below is a listing of the top 20 teams in the 2001 STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, as voted upon by NFHCA member coaches, with records through Oct. 14, 2001 and total points (first-place votes are in parentheses). Terrapin opponents are bolded.
