COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland women's volleyball team has two important ACC matches this weekend at Ritchie Coliseum. The Terps face Florida State on Saturday (Oct. 20) and No. 25 North Carolina on Sunday (Oct. 21), with both matches scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
* The Terps have been on fire of late, winning six of their last eight matches. Five of those victories have come over ACC opponents including Florida State. The Terps won in Tallahassee (3-2) 24-30, 30-28, 22-30, 30-24, 15-13 on Sept. 26.
* The Terrapins will be looking to even the season series at one with UNC after the Tar Heels won in three games Sept. 21 in Chapel Hill.
Terps Look To Climb In The Regional Rankings
* Maryland is ranked No. 7 in the East region in the NCAA regional rankings, released by the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee.
* Six ACC schools are ranked in the East region top 10 led by North Carolina. Other ACC schools in the top 10 include No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 5 Wake Forest and No. 10 Florida State.
* The Terps own victories over Duke and Florida State while dropping a hard-fought five-game decision at No. 3 Georgia Tech last weekend.
* After this weekend, the Terps still have matches remaining vs. regional foes Duke and Wake Forest. The Terps travel to Durham to face the Blue Devils (Nov. 3) and face Wake Forest in Winston-Salem (Oct. 30).
The Latest On The Seminoles
* FSU is 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the ACC to begin the week. The Seminoles travel to Virginia on Friday before facing the Terps on Saturday. FSU has won five of their last seven matches including a 3-2 ACC mark during the stretch.
* The Terps topped FSU in five games earlier this season on the road at Tallahassee to improve their overall series lead to 12-7.
* Saturday's game is also a matchup of two coaches with the longest active tenures at their respective schools. FSU's Dr. Cecile Reynaud has coached all 25 years of her career at FSU while Janice Kruger is in her 14th season with the Terps. Kruger owns an impressive 16-5 career coaching record vs. Reynaud and the 'Noles.
* Leading the FSU attack in 2001 has been middle hitter Norisha Campbell. Campbell leads the team in kills (255), hitting percentage (.349) and total blocks (79).
The Inside Scoop On No. 25 North Carolina
* North Carolina is on top of the ACC with a perfect 9-0 mark and an equally impressive 17-3 overall mark. The Tar Heels are the only ACC team ranked in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches' Top 25 poll, coming in at No. 25.
* The Tar Heels have been dominant in ACC play, dropping just six games all season. The Tar Heels have swept four ACC foes including the Terps on Sept. 21 in Chapel Hill.
* The only three teams to top the Tar Heels this season include Penn State, UC Santa Barbara and Santa Clara.
* Janice Kruger is 12-15 all-time vs. the Heels while Maryland as a team is 16-23 against Carolina.
* Nicole Reis is the team's top hitter, racking up 305 kills in 20 matches. Reis is also among the team leaders in digs with 201, which place her third.
A Balanced Attack Leads The Way
* Maryland has four players in triple-figures with kills including two players with over 200 kills. Both junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) and sophomore outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) rank 1-2 on the team in kills.
* DiLivio ranks first on the team with 214 kills in 17 matches. In her first season as a regular, DiLivio has performed extremely well and has developed into one of the team's top players.
* Brennan's 206 kills rank second on the team while leading the Terps in attempts (540) and digs (175). Brennan led the team in kills last season and finished second on the team as a freshman in the same category. Earlier in the season, Brennan totaled a season-high 20 kills in the FSU victory.
* Senior middle hitter Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.) is third on the team with 180 kills. Dority also leads the team and the Atlantic Coast Conference with a .365 hitting percentage.
* Sophomore right side Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) is fourth on the team with 176 kills and leads the team in service aces with 31. As a freshman, Jones led the entire ACC with 45 service winners.
Injuries A Concern For the Terps
* Two of the Terps top players, juniors Carey Brennan and Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.), are both battling injury heading into this weekend's matches.
* Brennan missed her first match in two seasons Tuesday against NC State with an elbow injury. Her status for this weekend is still to be decided.
* Davey is battling a shoulder injury and will also be a game time decision this weekend. The only match that Davey has not started over the past two seasons was the NC State match earlier in the year. Davey still felt the effects of a sprained ankle she suffered vs. North Carolina the night before.
