COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Senior quarterback Shaun Hill, who accounted for 428 yards of total offense in last Saturday's victory at Duke, has been named the ACC Offensive Back of the Week, the league office announced Monday,
Hill's honor marks the 11th time this season a Terrapin has received an ACC Player of the Week award.
Here is a look at this week's honorees:
Offensive Back - Shaun Hill, QB, Maryland
Shaun Hill threw for 323 yards on a 26 for 32 performance and added 105
rushing yards as his Maryland Terrapins dropped Duke 59-17 in ACC play.
The Parsons, Kan., native helped Maryland score touchdowns on its first
six possessions, as the Terrapins opened a 42-10 halftime lead over the
Blue Devils. In addition to his one touchdown pass, the senior also ran
for two scores of his own, including a 2-yard run to open the game's
scoring.
Offensive Lineman - Brett Williams, OT, Florida State
Brett Williams cleared the way for Florida State to run for a
season-high 303 yards in a 43-7 victory over Virginia. The junior native
of Kissimmee, Fla., led the Florida State offensive line with a grade of
94%, including no penalties, sacks, or quarterback pressures. The 533
yards of total offense were also a season-high for the Seminoles, as
Williams made a key block to spring Eric Shelton for 56 of those yards
on one carry. Three different Seminoles rushed for over 75 yards on the
day.
Defensive Lineman - Julius Peppers, DE, North Carolina
Julius Peppers made five tackles and added a sack and an interception as
North Carolina beat Clemson 38-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference action.
The junior from Bailey, N.C., leads North Carolina and all defensive
linemen around the nation with three interceptions. Peppers'
interception against Clemson came at a crucial early stage of the game,
as North Carolina led just 7-3 in the second quarter before the
momentum-changing play. Peppers jumped high to deflect Clemson
quarterback Woody Dantzler's pass and then lunged from his knees to
catch the ball and complete an incredibly athletic display.
Defensive Back - Abdual Howard, RV, Florida State
Abdual Howard made his third career interception, as well as his first
of the season, before returning it 80 yards for a third quarter
touchdown, as his Florida State Seminoles defeated Virginia 43-7. The
senior from Quincy, Fla., was credited with five tackles, as he helped
limit the Virginia offense to 201 yards on the day. With 54 tackles on
the season, Howard ranks third in the category among the Seminoles.
Howard's interception was one of five Virginia turnovers on the day.
Specialist - Mike Abrams, P, Virginia
Mike Abrams punted seven times on the day for the Cavaliers as Virginia
was defeated 43-7 by Florida State. In addition to his average of 43.9
yards per punt, the senior from Aiken, S.C., had a long punt of 67
yards, the longest punt of the season in the conference. Abrams was
counted on numerous times to punt from deep inside of Cavalier
territory, constantly trying to push the Seminole starting point back
into their own territory.
Rookie - Darian Durant, QB, North Carolina, Tony Hargrove, DE, Georgia
Tech
Darian Durant was a perfect 11 for 11 on the day, passing for 97 yards
and one touchdown in North Carolina's 38-3 victory over Clemson. The
freshman from Florence, S.C., also rushed for two touchdowns on his own,
engineering four scoring drives for the Tar Heels. With the game still
close at 7-3 in the first half, Durant found Bosley Allen in the corner
of the endzone with a 22-yard touchdown pass. Tony Hargrove had an
equally impressive day for Georgia Tech, forcing two Wolfpack fumbles in
the Yellow Jackets' 27-17 decision over NC State. The freshman from
Punta Gorde, Fla., made six tackles, adding one sack and two quarterback
pressures. The Wolfpack total of 264 yards was the lowest by a Georgia
Tech ACC opponent since 1998.
