GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Three members of the University of Maryland football team -- quarterback Shaun Hill, offensive guard Todd Wike and cornerback Tony Okanlawon -- have been named ACC Players of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
All three players were cited for their efforts in the Terps' 41-21 victory over Virginia last Saturday.
A glance at this week's ACC Players of the Week:
Offensive Back - Shaun Hill, QB, Maryland
Shaun Hill engineered Maryland's first victory over Virginia in ten
years by throwing for 237 yards and two touchdowns in the 41-21 victory.
The senior quarterback from Parsons, Kansas, went 22 of 35 and added 16
rush attempts for 47 yards and a touchdown. In addition, Hill ran for
two first downs on fourth-down plays. With the Maryland lead closed to
24-21, Hill guided the Terrapins to a 14-play, 80-yard touchdown drive
that culminated with a third down touchdown pass.
Offensive Lineman - Todd Wike, OG, Maryland
Todd Wike earned Maryland's highest grade among offensive linemen, as
the junior from Lebanon, Penn., helped spring Terrapin running back
Bruce Perry for 143 yards on the day. Wike and the rest of the Maryland
offensive line did not surrender a sack, and they contributed greatly to
the Terps overall time of possession of over 37 minutes. Maryland had
its second highest total offensive output on the season, accumulating
480 yards in a 41-21 victory over Virginia.
Defensive Lineman - Greg Gathers, DE, Georgia Tech
Greg Gathers had eight tackles, two quarterback sacks, and three tackles
for loss in helping Georgia Tech to a 37-10 victory over Duke in ACC
action. The junior from LaPlace, La., accumulated 16 yards of losses in
his two sacks of Duke quarterback D. Bryant, and he was also credited
with two quarterback pressures. The Yellow Jackets held Duke to just 73
yards in the second half.
Defensive Back - Ryan Fowler, DB/OLB, Duke --- Tony Okanlawon, CB,
Maryland
Maryland senior cornerback Tony Okanlawon and Duke sophomore outside
linebacker Ryan Fowler shared ACC Defensive Back of the Week Honors
after each had solid performances in ACC contests. Okanlawon had four
pass breakups and his fourth interception of the season, as he moved to
second in the nation in averaging 0.80 interceptions per game. His
34-yard interception return set up a fourth quarter touchdown for
Maryland, which went on to defeat Virginia 41-21. Fowler also had an
interception, only the second of his career, which led to Duke's only
touchdown of the game. Fowler led Duke with 17 tackles in the game,
nine of which were unassisted.
Specialist - Luke Manget, PK, Georgia Tech
Luke Manget kicked three field goals and four extra points for a perfect
afternoon in Georgia Tech's 37-10 victory over Duke. The junior from
Conyers, Ga., hit on field goals from 43, 26, and 27 yards, as well as
extending his consecutive PAT streak to 113. He is the ACC's leading
scorer with 9.8 points per game.
Rookie - Darian Durant, QB, North Carolina
Darian Durant threw for two touchdowns for the fourth time this season,
as his North Carolina Tar Heels edged past East Carolina 24-21. Durant
was 11 of 17 for 151 yards, throwing for two touchdowns without yielding
a sack or interception. With the Tar Heels down 10-0, Durant marched
them on a season-long 89 yard touchdown drive that was capped with a
29-yard TD reception by ChelseyBorders. Later in the game, the red
shirt freshman from Florence, S.C., threw a 21-yard touchdown pass in
the fourth quarter, helping North Carolina to the three point victory
margin.
