The Maryland volleyball team will look for its first win of the season over Georgia Tech Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2001 ACC Volleyball Championship at Florida State University. The Terps enter this weekend's championship as the No. 6 seed after finishing the regular season 7-9 in the ACC and 11-13 overall.
* The seven ACC victories are the most for Maryland since 1997 when the Terps finished a perfect 16-0. The '97 campaign was the second straight year that the Terps went undefeated in the conference after finishing the 1996 season 16-0. The '96 club was also the last team in the conference to finish the season unbeaten in the league as the Terrapins finished a perfect 19-0 including the tournament championship.
* The four-day event begins on Thursday (Nov. 15) with a first round matchup between the No. 8 seed Virginia and the No. 9 seed NC State at 7:30 p.m.
Round Three: Maryland Vs. Georgia Tech
* The Terrapins are very familiar with their opponent Friday night when they face Georgia Tech for the third time this season and for the second straight game. Georgia Tech downed the Terps in four games (30-26, 19-30, 21-30, 21-30) on Senior Day last Saturday at Ritchie Coliseum.
* In a strange twist, the rematch with Georgia Tech will mark the third time in four years that the Terrapins have opened the ACC Championship against the team they faced to end the regular season. In 1998, Maryland faced Duke to end the regular season and in the ACC Championship, winning both meetings. One year later in 1999, the Terps ended the regular season and played their first match of the ACC Championship vs. NC State, losing both.
* In the two meetings in 2001, the Terps are 0-2 including a five-game loss (26-30, 30-25, 30-27, 24-30, 8-15) in Atlanta. The loss was even tougher to swallow for the Terrapins after Maryland won two of the first three games of the match.
* Two players that have stood out for the Terps vs. Tech this season have been junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) and senior middle hitter Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.). Brennan has smacked a team-leading 33 kills in the two matches vs. Tech, averaging 3.67 kills per game. Dority ranks second on the team with 32 kills vs. Tech, good for an average of 3.56 kills per game.
Against The Field At The ACC Championship
* The Terps are 18-17 all-time at the ACC Volleyball Championship including an 8-4 mark in their opening match.
* Maryland is 2-1 vs. Georgia Tech with two of those meetings coming in the championship match. The Terps upended Tech for the 1996 ACC Championship and also downed the Yellow Jackets in the quarterfinal round of the 1993 tournament in five games. The only win Georgia Tech has over the Terps came in the 1995 title match when the Yellow Jackets won in three games.
* The Terps have won five of their last six opening matches at the ACC Championship, including last season's three-game shutout over Clemson.
Terrapin News And Notes At The ACC Volleyball Championship

* The Terrapins have had seven players all-time selected to the all-tournament team. Most recently, Elizabeth Efron was named to the 1997 team.

No. 1 Doing It All For The Terps
* Junior outside hitter Carey Brennan has put together a season worthy of All-ACC honors. Brennan ranks among the league leaders in kills and digs while leading the team in those respective categories.
* Brennan has been putting up terrific numbers this season and added a career milestone in the North Carolina win. Brennan slammed 20 kills in the UNC victory including her 1,000th career kill. For the season, Brennan leads the team with 332 kills.
* Also a sound defensive player, Brennan is closing in on her 1,000th career dig. Brennan leads the Terps with 280 digs and needs just 52 digs for the 1,000 mark for her career.
Dority Taking Care Of Business In The Middle
* Senior middle hitter Willette Dority has been terrific in the middle for the Terps this season. In her first year as a starter, Dority leads the team and ranks second in the ACC in hitting percentage (.355).
* After missing most the last three seasons with injuries, Dority got off to an impressive start to open the season as she was named to the all-tournament team at the Blimpie/Holiday Inn Classic at Indiana University. The New York native also has earned ACC Player of the Week honors for the Terps this season.
Davey The Table Setter For The Terps
* Junior setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) has been the table setter for the Terrapin attack for the past two seasons. After playing in a reserve role as a freshman, Davey has started every match except one over the past two years.
* Davey leads the team with 1,080 assists and ranks fourth in the ACC with 11.87 assists per game. It is the second straight year that Davey has gone over the 1,000-mark in assists after dishing out 1,235 assists last season.
* The 1,235 assists last year placed Davey fifth on the all-time single-season assist chart at Maryland. With her 1,080 assists this season, Davey is currently 10th on the single-season assist chart for the Terps.
* Davey has also handed out 50-plus assists 12 times this season including six matches with over 60 assists. Davey handed out a season-high 67 helpers in the upset win over North Carolina. The Colorado native was also named to the all-tournament team at the B&G Properties Invitational at Southwest Texas after helping guide the Terps to three wins and the tournament championship.
A Pair Of Sophomores Stepping It Up On The Outside
* Sophomore outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) and sophomore right side Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) have stepped it up in their second year with the Terps. Both players earned time in a reserve role as freshmen, but both have flourished in starting roles in 2001.
* DiLivio is second on the team with 292 kills after totaling just 96 as a freshman. Over her last two matches, DiLivio has been playing well both offensively and defensively, with two double-doubles to her credit. In the victory over Clemson, DiLivio registered 17 kills, 11 digs and two blocks while she finished with 15 kills, 10 digs and three blocks in a loss to Georgia Tech.
* Jones has used a potent jump serve to rank sixth in the conference with 0.45 service aces per game. During her freshman season, Jones totaled 45 aces to lead the conference. The California native has also been a factor in the Terrapin attack, ranking fourth on the team with 233 kills and she is one of four players with over 200 kills.
* Jones will look to regain her form she had the B&G Properties Invitational, where she was named tournament MVP. Jones led the team in kills as the Terps won three matches to claim the tournament title.
Who's Hot And Who's Not Entering The Tournament
* Duke enters this week's ACC Volleyball Championship as the No. 1 seed after winning the regular season championship this past weekend with a pair of wins to finish the season 13-3 in conference play. The Blue Devils finished the year on a five-game winning streak and won nine of their last 10 matches.
* North Carolina had been in first place in the league for the first half of the season before Maryland handed the Tar Heels their first ACC loss of the year. UNC started the ACC season 9-0 before losing to the Terps and went on to finish 12-4 and in second place in the conference.
* Georgia Tech enters as the No. 3 seed after going 8-2 in its final 10 matches of the year to finish in the ACC at 12-4. The Yellow Jackets finished the regular season with an overall mark of 18-6 and enter Friday's match with the Terps on a four-game winning streak.
* Florida State enters on a roll as the No. 4 seed by going 8-2 down the stretch to seal the No. 4 spot. The Seminoles have won three matches in a row and are 9-3 at home this season, which is also home to the ACC Championship.
* The Demon Deacons of Wake Forest are the tournament's No. 5 seed after finishing the regular season 10-6 in the conference. Wake did manage to finish 7-3 in its last 10 matches, but lost its final two matches of the year heading into this week's conference championship.
* The Clemson Tigers are the No. 7 seed after this season's 4-12 conference mark. Clemson struggled down the stretch, finishing at 4-6, but the Tigers did manage to defeat Virginia in five games in the regular season finale for both schools.
