TALLAHASSEE. Fla.- Junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) and freshman middle hitter Alexandra Toregas (Chevy Chase, Md.) were named to a pair of All-ACC teams Wednesday evening by the ACC's nine head coaches. Brennan was selected to the All-ACC second team while Toregas was named to the All-ACC Freshman team.
Brennan has put together an outstanding season from her outside hitter position. Brennan led the Terps in kills (332) and digs (280) while ranking in the top 10 in the ACC in both categories. The ACC Player of the Week for Oct. 1, Brennan has led Maryland in kills and digs for the past two seasons and is on track to become the school's all-time leader in both categories. Brennan is the first Terrapin on either the All-ACC first or second team since 1997 when Jamie Summers was a first-team selection.
Toregas is just the fourth Terp ever to be named to the all-freshman team. In 18 matches, Toregas slammed 62 kills and totaled 21 blocks including a career-high 14 kills and five blocks at Virginia on Oct. 27. The last Maryland player selected to the all-freshman team was Carey Brennan in 1999.
Both players will be in action for the Terps Friday (Nov. 16) when the sixth-seeded Terrapins face the No. 3 seed Georgia Tech. The quarterfinal match of the ACC Volleyball Championship is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Tully Gym on the campus of Florida State University.
