COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The ACC Champion Maryland Terrapins (17-3) will be surfing the Internet Tuesday at 8 p.m. as the field for the 2001 NCAA Field Hockey Championship is cybercast at www.ncaa.org. Members of the media are invited to attend the Terps' pre-show meal and watch the selection as 16 field hockey teams from throughout the nation are seeded and assigned sites and opponents for the first and second rounds of the tournament.
Maryland enters the selection process "red hot," victorious in its last six games. A 4-1 win over No. 7 Virginia and a 3-2 victory against No. 3 Wake Forest lifted Maryland to its fourth straight ACC Championship this past weekend. Honda hopeful Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) was named Tournament MVP, while fellow senior Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) and junior Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) were selected to the all-tournament team. However, the ACC is a four-member conference, and all conferences with less than six members rely on one of eight at-large bids for selection to the national tournament.
The Terrapins ranked second in the previously released NCAA Poll (Oct. 23), and the top four seeds are selected to host first and second round games.
Conference champions that receive automatic bids after last weekend include: Northeastern (America East), Syracuse (BIG EAST), Old Dominion (CAA), Ohio State (Big Ten), Fairfield (Patriot), Massachusetts (Atlantic-10) and Ohio University (MAC). Princeton, the Ivy Group regular-season champion, receives an automatic bid without a conference tournament. The winner of the play-in game between NorPac champ California and NEC title-winner Quinnipiac on Tuesday (11 a.m. PT) will automatically receive the 16th seed in the tournament.
Fans are encouraged to catch the broadcast online by clicking on the link on the NCAA field hockey page. The NCAA encourages all to register ahead of time to reserve a space and check your computer's ability to view the show. An audio/video software program and a sound card and speakers is necessary to download the cybercast, which is anticipated to run for 20 minutes. Those without Internet access can call 303-262-2175 to listen on the telephone.
The moderators will be Towson University Associate Athletics Director Nance Reed, chair of the Division I Field Hockey Committee, and Kristin Whitted Fasbender, NCAA assistant director of championships.
