COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The ACC Champion Maryland Terrapins (17-3) earned the second seed in the 2001 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship and were selected to host the First and Second Rounds of the tournament, to be played Nov. 10 and 11 at the Artificial Turf Facility.
The Terps, making their seventh consecutive appearance in the national tournament and 15th overall (14 NCAA, one AIAW in 1979), will take on the Fairfield Stags of the Patriot League (11-10) on Saturday at 11 a.m. in College Park. BIG EAST representative Syracuse (15-3) squares off against Cal-Berkeley (13-4) of the NorPac at 2 p.m. The winners meet in the Second Round game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Maryland enters the NCAA Championships on a six game win streak and fresh off their fourth-consecutive ACC tournament title. Honda Award hopeful Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) was named ACC Tournament MVP, ACC Co-Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Week and Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week after helping the Terps to victories over Virginia, 4-1, and Wake Forest, 3-2, en route to the fifth conference title in school history. Senior Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) and junior Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) were selected to the all-tournament team as well, while Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) was named ACC Rookie of the Year.
The Terrapins will have to defeat Fairfield and Syracuse or California to reach their third straight NCAA semifinal and seventh overall, and advance to Kent, Ohio.
Defending national champion Old Dominion, a team that defeated the Terps twice during the regular season, was tabbed the No. 1 seed in the tournament and will travel to Princeton, N.J., for the first and second rounds. No. 3 Wake Forest hosts the opening rounds and faces Ohio, while No. 4 North Carolina will visit Ann Arbor, Michigan, and meet the Wolverines in its first NCAA action since the 2000 title game.
