COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The women's tennis team (5-5, 0-0 ACC) stumbled Sunday against No. 42 Minnesota in the College Park Tennis Center, ending a four-match homestand. The Terps netted one doubles victory and two singles wins but that was not enough to defeat the Golden Gophers who claimed the 5-2 victory. Sophomore Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) with freshman partner Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) netted the first Terp victory with an 9-7 win over Tammy Wang and Jen Howard at the No. 2 doubles spot. This is their third win together on the season.
The Golden Gophers claimed the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to earn the team point. They followed with victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions. Causevic and freshman Olivia Dubovikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each battled through three difficult sets before falling to their opponents at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Senior Catherine Valantin (Metz, France), who has emerged as a team leader, earned her fourth consecutive singles win when she defeated Minnesota's Michaela Havelkova in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at the No. 3 singles. Marker claimed the last Terp victory at the No. 5 singles with a tiebreaker over Jen Howard. The final score was 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7).
The Terps are back in action on March 19 when they travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to face their first ACC opponent of the season. The Florida State Seminoles are currently 6-5 overall. Matches are slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
