ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Maryland women's golf team concluded the 13th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Golf Championship with a fifth place overall finish on Sunday, April 22 at the Disney's Palm Course. The Terrapins closed the three-day tournament with a total of 952 strokes (+88), 53 strokes behind tournament winner Duke University and seven strokes behind fourth-place finisher North Carolina.
Impressive performances from Terps' freshmen carried Maryland throughout the tournament. First-time participants Marie Harper (West Point, Va.) and Katie Redeker (Pepper Pikes, Ohio) both finished the tournament with a three-day total of 234 strokes, and were tied in 11th place individually. Harper fired 77-78-79 for the three rounds and has led the Terps in individual scoring in the past four consecutive events. Redeker regained her stroke from her disappointing second round performance and finished the tournament with 76-80-78 for the three rounds.
Sophomore Erin Clasper (Potomac, Md.) finished the tournament with Terps' best final round finish. Clasper fired a 76 (+4) third round to close out the event with a total of 240 strokes. She finished third on the team and tied-17th individually. Sophomore Carter Crowther (Kilmarnock, Va.) shot a consistent 81-82-82 for the three rounds and finished the tournament with a total of 245 strokes. Freshman Kara Gropler (Franklin, N.J.) carded 87-83-85 for the three rounds and finished the tournament with 255 strokes.
Duke freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn won the individual title with an even-par 216 score and the Blue Devils won the team championship with an 899 team score. It marked the third consecutive year a Duke player had won the individual championship and the conference-record sixth consecutive team victory for the Blue Devils.
Nirapathpongporn won the individual championship despite shooting a four-over par 76 in the final round. It marked her first over-par round during the three-round event. Nirapathpongporn held off a late charge by Kathryn Brenny of Wake Forest. Brenny shot a personal tournament-best two-under par 70 in Sunday's final round and finished behind Nirapathpongporn by five strokes. Brenny was tied for fourth to begin the third round and made up six strokes over the final 18 holes.
Duke has now won a record nine ACC women's golf championships.
