COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 2001 field hockey season is officially underway with the opening of preseason practice on Friday. The squad begins two-a-day sessions in preparation for the Terps' season opener on Aug. 25. Maryland opens its 2001 campaign with a three-game road trip to Stanford University to face California, Pacific and the host Cardinal on the west coast.
On Thursday the squad reported to campus with their families. Athletics Director Deborah A. Yow and Assistant A.D. Jane Mullens joined head coach Missy Meharg in welcoming the Terrapins and parents to campus as part of an orientation lunch to kick off preseason camp. The Terps checked into their preseason living quarters, underwent physical examinations and met the field hockey support staff.
The 2001 Terrapins return seven starters, including 2000 All-Americans Rachel Hiskins (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia), Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) and Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.). The addition of nine talented newcomers to a Maryland team that captured three straight ACC titles and appeared in two consecutive NCAA semifinals gives Meharg high hopes for the upcoming season.
"This is a well-balanced team," stated the three-time national coach of the year. "It should be a really exciting year. I think that Maryland will continue to play up to its standard and try to raise the bar for NCAA field hockey."
