COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland batted .500 on the opening day of full-squad football practice Saturday, getting a spirited two-hour workout in during extremely humid conditions Saturday morning before a late afternoon thunderstorm wiped out the afternoon practice plans.
Said first-year head coach Ralph Friedgen following the morning workout: "I thought their retention was good, they struggled with the heat a little bit, but everybody does. I wasn't disappointed. We're better now than how we ended up in the spring."
On his team's conditioning entering two-a-days, Friedgen added: "For the most part [I felt they were in good condition}. What happens, the heat wears on you after awhile. I think they went through the first 3/4 of practice pretty good, but when you have to start thinking when you're tired, that's what you have to get conditioned to, because that's what wins games for you, when you don't make mistakes when you're tired. It's a mental toughness thing. You have to really focus, it's not easy. That's why I have them practice at a fast pace."
The Terps are slated to hit the practice field on Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
