College Park, Md. - The University of Maryland, Soccer America's No. 15 team, downed Richmond in it's final exhibition contest of the year 1-0. Redshirt sophomore A.J. Herrera (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored the Terps' only goal of the night with under 15 minutes left to play to secure the win.
Early on, the Spiders were able to possess the ball and disturb the Terps' flow until midway through the first half when Maryland began to control the tempo. For the remainder of the night, Maryland dominated nearly every category, including most noticeably the shot category by a 15-3 margin. Play was scoreless despite several good Terrapin runs until the 70th minute when freshman Michael Dello-Russo (Columbia, Md.) took a shot from six yards out that Richmond keeper Mike Nwaneri saved. Herrera was there for the easy follow into the lower right corner of the net for the Terrapins' game-winning goal. Dello-Russo and Siba Mohammed (Tamale, Ghana) were both credited with assist on the play.
Both the Terps and Spiders split time in goal, with Kevin Schmidt (Westfield, N.J.) earning the start for the Terps and Shawn Alexander (one save) for the Spiders. Terps' freshman Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.) and Richmond's Nwaneri (four saves) entered in the second period between the nets.
The Terps open the regular season against No. 7 UCLA on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Virginia/Coca-Cola Classic Tournament in Charlottesville, Va. Maryland continues tournament action against American on Sept. 2 at noon before heading home to host the Maryland/FILA Classic on Sept. 7-9. No. 3 Virginia and American open tournament action at 5 p.m., while the Terps begin their home slate with No. 8 Creighton, a 2000 College Cup finalist, at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 7. The Cavaliers and Blue Jays meet on Sunday, Sept. 9 at noon to start the soccer tripleheader. Maryland and American round out men's action at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Maryland women vs. Towson at 5 p.m. All home games will be played at Ludwig Field.
