SUNNYVALE, Calif. -
The Maryland field hockey squad used their second-to-last day on the West Coast to take in the sights of the beautiful San Francisco bay area and world famous Pier 39. After a good early morning practice, the Terps cleaned up and climbed into the vans for the trip downtown.
Along the way, the Terrapins spotted attractions such as the Bay Bridge, 3Com Park and Pac Bell Stadium. After an adventure through the parking garage and lunch at the pier, the Terps piled into the ferry and toured the San Francisco Bay.
While on the ferry, the Terps took in sights such as Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge, and contributed to Angie Klingerman's videography of Maryland's West Coast road trip. Then the Terrapins met up with some local fans after the boat docked and joined them in a rousing rendition of the Maryland fight song.
Here are tonight's postcards - among the last from the team. There will be a postcards wrap-up following when the Terps get back to College Park.
Freshman Courtney Thornton (Annapolis, Md.): Hey to everyone back home in Maryland! I've had a great time out here in Cali. Today we went into San Francisco and took a boat ride. We saw the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and met some Terp fans living out here on the West Coast. I can't believe this trip is coming to an end, I definitely am not ready to get back to reality and start class again. But ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Well, I'd love to write more but this Terp has got to get to bed, and curfew is in less than two minutes. I'll see everyone when I get home. Go Terps, Beat Stanford!!!
Freshman Lucy Morris (Ascot Vale, Victoria, Australia): Ahoy hoy to you all! Our last night in Cali and as much as I've had an ace time I wanna get home to start school...yay! (note the sarcasm). We hung out today in San Fran, caught a boat around the bay, ate mangos (apparently I got a bit on my face) and yeah...that's about it. I'm tired and sunburnt and have to go to bed so this is short. Hello to everyone in Australia....miss you guys...!!! :o)
Junior Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa): Hello to all of you back on the East Coast! As I'm sure you have heard, the weather here is great and the Terps are reaping all the benefits. We are so psyched for our game vs. Stanford tomorrow, but we are also looking forward to getting back to College Park and starting the fall semester. Our entire team went into the city of San Francisco today where we did some major shopping, took a boat ride, annoyed quite a few tourists, and even saw some sea lions basking in the sun! After floating past Alcatraz and under the Golden Gate bridge, the Terp team of 2001 is ready to go home!! Can't wait to see everyone back in College Park...miss everyone lots...bye bye!
Senior Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.): Hello to everyone back on the East Coast. I miss you guys, and hope you're enjoying the last days before school starts. California is beautiful!!! The weather has been incredible and the scenery absolutely takes your breath away...I wouldn't mind spending some more time here in the future. I missed out on the trip to San Fran today, so I don't have much news to report. We have been playing pretty well. We are preparing for our game against Stanford tomorrow. Everyone seems pretty tired right now, but it's nothing a good night's rest won't take care of. I look forward to seeing everyone soon...bye!
