Terps Open The 2001 Season On The Road At Indiana
* The Terrapins open the 2001 campaign at the Blimpie/Holiday Inn Classic in Bloomington, Ind. and will face three non-conference opponents. Big Ten foe Indiana is first up for the Terps on Friday (Aug. 31) at 7 p.m. and two clashes with Tennessee and Bowling Green on Saturday (Sept. 1) round out play for Maryland in Bloomington.
* The Aug. 31 starting date for the season is the earliest the Terps have opened a season since 1997 when Maryland opened the year Aug. 29 and defeated Kent State 15-10-, 15-4, 15-8.
* Head coach Janice Kruger is 8-5 all-time in season openers during her career at Maryland. The Terps dropped their season opener in 2000 to No. 24 Michigan (6-15, 7-15, 8-15) at the Pacific Invitational.
* Maryland is 19-11 all-time in season openers, including wins in four of its last five openers.
Series Notes Against The Field In Bloomington
* Friday's meeting with Indiana is the first between the two schools.
* Maryland is 1-0 all-time against Tennessee after downing the Volunteers on Oct. 7, 1990 at home, 15-10, 17-15, 15-4.
* The Terrapins are 0-2 all-time vs. Bowling Green. BGSU downed Maryland Sept. 1, 1990 (6-15, 6-15, 15-7, 12-15) at the George Washington Labor Day Invitational and Sept. 18, 1987 (11-15, 4-15, 1-15) at the West Virginia Invitational.
Kruger Just Three Wins Shy Of 250 At Maryland
* Janice Kruger needs just three victories to reach the 250 mark for her career as leader of the Terps.
* One of the nation's elite coaches, Kruger has amassed an impressive 247-162 record during her 14-year career in College Park. In the ACC, Kruger is among the all-time greats, with her 247 wins placing her third on the all-time list for victories.
* Kruger ranks 10th among NCAA coaches with 599 career victories at NCAA schools.
* Against the field in Bloomington, Kruger owns a 1-2 mark for her career at Maryland. Kruger is 1-0 against the Volunteers of Tennessee and is 0-2 all-time vs. Bowling Green.
Plenty of Firepower Returns for the Terps
* A pair of juniors, Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) and Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.), return to spearhead the Maryland attack in 2001.
* Davey finished the 2000 campaign with 1,235 assists, fifth best ever in a single season at Maryland. The only setter on the roster last season, Davey played in every game of the year.
* Brennan put together an outstanding all-around season in which she led Maryland in kills (441) and digs (375). The 441 kills place Brennan third all-time for single-season kills at Maryland. With 751 kills in just two seasons with the Terrapins, Brennan is on pace to become the school's all-time leader in kills (Colleen Hurley is first with 1,238).
* Davey will have more than just Brennan to pass to this season as senior middle hitter Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.), junior Amanda Ayres (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) and sophomores Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) and Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) all return to the attack.
* Dority has battled injuries throughout her career but is healthy and should be a major impact in the middle for Kruger and the Terrapins. After missing most of the 2000 season with a back injury, Dority finished the year strong and was a vital cog in the Maryland offense over the final five matches of the season.
* Ayres, one of the most versatile players on the squad, can play in the middle, on the outside or even in the back row. Last season, Ayres tallied 192 kills and 284 digs in 104 games.
* DiLivio saw more and more playing time as her freshman season went along and showed Kruger that she is another player that can be counted on in big games. On Senior Day against Clemson, DiLivio shined with career-highs in kills (18) and digs (14).
* Jones led the ACC with 45 service aces in 2000. After an outstanding offseason, Jones will play a vital role in the Terrapin attack.
Youth Will Be Served
* Six freshmen will be making their collegiate debuts in Bloomington at the Hoosier Invitational this weekend. Roxann Calderon (San Antonio, Texas), Jennifer Dewalt (Bethlehem, Pa.), Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas), Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.), Alexandra Toregas (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas).
* Huddleston will be one of two setters on the roster in 2001. The Texas native will give Maryland a quality option behind starter Lindsay Davey.
* Smith and Toregas provide much needed depth at the middle hitter position and should see early playing time behind starter Willette Dority.
* Calderon is the only southpaw for the Terps and will be used from the right side position while Dewalt and Treadwell will play at outside hitter.
* With just two seniors on the roster, the future of Maryland volleyball is bright for years to come. 11 sophomores and freshmen dot the roster while four juniors make up the rest of the team.
* Dority and defensive specialist Shannon Toback (Ellicott City, Md.) are the lone two seniors, but both have seen limited game action for the Terps. Dority has battled injuries throughout her career and has only participated in 38 matches in three seasons. Toback joined the team as a junior and has only played in 28 matches.
Up Next For The Terps
* Maryland continues its six-match road trip to start the season Sept. 7-8 in San Marcos, Texas at the B&G Properties Invitational, hosted by Southwest Texas.
* The two-day event will match the Terrapins against Southwest Texas on Friday (Sept. 7) at 7 p.m. and vs. Providence on Saturday (Sept. 8) at 10 a.m. and Texas A&M- Corpus Christi at 5 p.m.
