STANFORD, Calif. -
Two-time regional All-American Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) broke open a second-half scoreless stalemate and the Terp defense posted its third shutout in as many games as the Maryland field hockey squad blanked Stanford, 3-0, at the Cardinal campus in Northern California. Senior keeper Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) picked up her second solo shutout and All-American Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) and the backfield held Stanford to two shots.
The Terrapins concluded their first-ever trip to the West Coast with a 3-0 record. Maryland won its three matches by a combined score of 19-0.
The match was scoreless after a hotly contested first half, as the Terrapins outshot the Cardinal 12-1 but could not find the back of the net. The competition was intense, as evidenced by a pair of green cards issued to Maryland and a yellow assessed to Stanford.
Senior forward Rizzo cracked the scoreboard with 22:44 to play in the game, lifting the ball over outstretched Cardinal keeper Emily Shapiro. The Stanford goalie made a save on a penalty corner blast from senior All-American Rachel Hiskins (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia), but could not stop Rizzo's putback. Freshman Lucy Morris (Ascot Vale, Victoria, Australia) then increased the lead by finishing a deflected Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) tip attempt at 11:20 after Rizzo slid the ball down low on a corner opportunity. Redshirt freshman Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) closed out the scoring on a direct corner hit from Morris and Welsh with 8:31 remaining.
Hohnstine made one save in another strong performance by the Terp defense. Stanford's Shapiro put in a sold performance with 18 saves while keeping Maryland off the scoreboard in the first half.
The Terps return home after their West Coast swing draws to a close before meeting defending national champion Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. That match is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m.
