COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The week he has been waiting for since being named Maryland's 33rd head football coach last November has finally arrived, as players report to fall camp this week in preparation for Ralph Friedgen's debut season as a head coach following 31 seasons as a highly successful assistant.
Friedgen, a '69 Maryland grad who later coached under Bobby Ross in the 1980s when the Terps dominated the ACC, welcomes 22 newcomers on Monday for four days of orientation, testing and practice. The returning varsity players - including 44 lettermen and 17 starters from the 2000 season -- report on Thursday.
The Terps will conduct their annual Media Day Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m. The first full-squad practice gets underway Saturday at 9:15 a.m. on the practice field located adjacent to Byrd Stadium.
Friedgen spent the last four seasons as offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, and recently was labeled as having "the best offensive mind in Saturday's America" by Sports Illustrated writer Ivan Maisel. Prior to his most recent stint at Georgia Tech, Friedgen coached under Ross with the San Diego Chargers and helped lead that franchise to its first and only Super Bowl appearance.
