KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -
Senior Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) fired a second round 67 on Monday afternoon to help lift the University of Maryland men's golf team into seventh place at the Cleveland Golf/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate golf tournament.
Brigham finished the day tied for fifth-place overall (73-67--140), four-under par and just five strokes back of tournament leader David Ryles of Charleston Southern. Brigham enter's Tuesday's final round tied with College of Charleston's Kyle Bradley who carded the tournament's low round of 66, also in Monday's second trip around the par 72 course at Osprey Point Golf Course.
No Maryland player shot par in Monday's opening round, but Brigham, senior Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.) and junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) each posted sub-par totals in their second round of 18 holes as the Terps shot six-under in round two, and finished the day as the only team entering the final round at even par.
After the first round of 18 holes on the 6,871-yard track at Osprey Point, Maryland found itself in 10th place, though just six combined strokes above par. Three Terrapin individuals -- Brigham, Toole (73-71--144) and freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) -- each carded a one-over par 73 in the opening round of play.
It is Maryland's first competition of the fall 2001 season. For MacWhinnie, it is the first tournament of his college career. The final round of play begins Tuesday morning at 9:05.
