COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Welcome to this week's installment of "Inside the Circle," an inside look at Maryland field hockey. Each Monday throughout the 2001 season, junior Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md.) and senior Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) will combine to bring you the latest Terp happenings from the student-athlete's point-of-view.
Use Kateri and Autumn's journal to follow the Terps' 2001 campaign all season long. If you would like to submit question to our authors about field hockey, the Terps or anything (within reason!), send us an e-mail.
In the second edition of "Inside the Circle," Autumn talks about the team's rebound from their loss to Old Dominion and the Terps' success at the Terrapin Invitational.
Well hello there! Welcome again to the inside link to the Maryland field hockey team. This is No. 3 here, Autumn Welsh, givin' a shout out to all you wonderful Terp fans.
So ... here's the gossip. We've all recovered wonderfully from the loss to Old Dominion, and we're playing great together. Practices have been tough, both physically and emotionally. With such a diverse group of girls we're all still getting used to each other. It's been pretty dramatic for the past few days. Lots of soul searching for both players and coaches. We're definitely growing together though, with lots of open communication.
Our invitational tournament went really well. A lot of new players saw some game time at our first home venue. It was great to be back in MD with family and friends. How we missed those amazing tailgates. I don't know if it was the home field advantage, or just our excitement for the game, but something got our blood pumping in Sunday's game against Kent State. We played awesome!!! Everyone played really well, and we were pretty proud of our execution of the basic skills. We'll be sure to work hard to keep up those good habits.
On a personal note, I'm on a fast road to recovery from my eye injury last week at practice. For those of you that don't know, I took a good shot in the eye, and was left with quite a fine looking shiner. Half of the stitches are out, and I go to see the optomologist on Thursday to finish the deed. Although I love the rough and tough look, I'm getting a little tired of being stared at by random strangers -- can't wait til the bruise goes away.
This week we're in prime-time training mode for our trip up to the home of the Rizzos, good ol' Massachussets. Monday was a tough day of practice, gotta love those one-v-one's! I think we're all anxious to play this weekend though, especially because we finally get to sport our favorite black jerseys again.
Well Terp fans, that's about all for this week. Tune in next week for Kateri's wrap up of the UMass weekend.
This is Autumn Welsh signing off.
