No. 3 Field Hockey Opens ACC Play As No. 7 Wake Forest Visits College Park

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The third-ranked Maryland field hockey team (6-1) hosts No. 7 Wake Forest (3-2) as the Atlantic Coast Conference, arguably the strongest field hockey league in the NCAA, begins play on Saturday, Sept. 22. The 1 p.m. match-up pits the Terrapins, who have won three in a row after their only loss of the season (Sept. 1 at Old Dominion), against their second-consecutive NFHCA Top 10 opponent.

Maryland shut out a pair of foes, Northwestern (4-0 on Sept. 7) and Kent State (5-0 on Sept. 9), in capturing its fifth Terrapin Invitational title before joining the rest of the nation in cancelling matches on Sept. 15 and 16. After several days of rest, reflection and practice, the No. 3 Terps put together a tremendous team effort, handing No. 6 Michigan State a 4-1 loss in Columbus, Ohio.

The No. 3 Terps and No. 7 Demon Deacons meet for the 15th time since 1992 this weekend, with Maryland holding a 12-2 series advantage. The teams split a pair of matches last season, with then-No. 7 Wake posting a 5-3 win over the top-ranked Terps in Winston-Salem on Sept. 23. Maryland had its revenge in the ACC Semifinal however, dealing the Deacs a 3-1 loss at the Artificial Turf Facility.

Meet The Terps: Fans will have an opportunity to meet selected Terps after each home game during the 2001 season. Shortly following each contest, field hockey enthusiasts of all ages will have a chance to say "hello" and collect the autographs of some of their favorite Terrapins. Seniors Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md.), Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.) and Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.) will be signing posters and greeting Terp fans following the game against Wake Forest.

Terp Halftime Dribble N' Shoot: The wild halftime contest from the 2000 season is back for 2001, with a few new twists and surprises. Show off your field hockey skills at halftime and walk away a winner! Sign up to be a Dribble N' Shoot contestant at the marketing table and then listen for your name to be called during the first half.

Game Captains

Eight fourth-year players, nine newcomers, and seven in between. All will need to be ready to contribute for the Terps in 2001, and consistent with that theme, each member of the Maryland squad will experience captaincy at different points during the season.

Rather than having team captains in 2001, the coaching staff has decided to rotate different "Game Captains" for each contest. Carol Senkler and Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) will be the captain and vice captain, respectively, for the Terps' match against Wake Forest.
