HARRISONBURG, Va. - Junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) finished three strokes behind the tournament leader and senior Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.) shot even par on Saturday as the Maryland men's golf team ended the first round of competition just six strokes behind leader Penn State at the James Madison University Invitational. Maryland finished the day in second place out of 24 schools.
Moheyer's 68 on the first 18 holes left him tied for fourth place overall, just three strokes behind Penn State's Josh Danes (65), and two behind Kyle Hess of Richmond and John DeForest of St. John's. Toole, who shot 71, was tied with a host of players in a tie for 17th place leading into Sunday's second and final round of competition.
Other finishers for Maryland were freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at one over par (72), sophomore Tim Kane (73) and senior Corey Brigham (76). Brigham, perhaps the Terps' strongest player, finished third at last week's tournament at Kiawah Island, S.C.
