HARRISONBURG, Va. -
Maryland gained two strokes on first round leader Penn State, and three Terrapin golfers shot rounds of 72 or better on Sunday afternoon, but it was not enough to either overtake the Nittany Lions or stave off eventual champion St. John's at the 36-hole James Madison University men's golf invitational.
Led by junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) who carded a three-under par 68 for the second straight day, the Terrapins finished third in the 24-team event after entering the final round of competition six strokes behind Penn State and one ahead of St. John's. The Maryland contingent combined to shoot even par at 284 on Saturday, and improved to two-under 282 on Sunday, cutting six strokes off the Penn State lead. The Red Storm, though, shot seven strokes under par on Sunday, and was paced by medalist John DeForest (66-69-135) to claim the title.
Following the Terrapins who shot two-under par for the tournament, the nearest competitors were William & Mary and Richmond, who tied for fourth, at nine over.
Moheyer, who tied for second with George Mason's Craig Mason, was followed in the Maryland scoring column by senior Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.). Brigham shot five-over par on Saturday, but rebounded with a four-under 67 on Sunday to finish in 15th place overall, tied with senior teammate Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.) who carded a second round 72.
