Barbieri Claims Second ACC Field Hockey Player Of The Week Honor

Sept. 24, 2001

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland field hockey forward Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) was named ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week for the second time this season, announced Monday. The rookie attacker helped the No. 3 Terrapins (7-1, 1-0 ACC) to 4-1 victories over No. 6 Michigan State and No. 7 Wake Forest on Sept. 17 and 22, respectively.

Barbieri's single tally against the Spartans and pair of goals vs. the Demon Deacons were all scored in the second-half, helping the Terp squad to seal a four-game win streak. The two-time high school All-American leads the team in both goals (8) and points (18) and ranks in the top three scorers in the ACC and top five in the nation.

The award is the third of its kind for the Terrapins this season, as Barbieri was also tabbed by the conference on Aug. 27 and senior Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) shared honors Sept. 10. The freshman is a leading candidate for Maryland Female Student-Athlete of the Week, which will be announced tomorrow.

Barbieri, Rizzo and the Terps host a pair of top 20 teams this weekend in No. 5 Princeton and No. 12 Virginia. The Terps take on the Tigers on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and meet the Cavaliers in an ACC tilt on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at College Park's Artificial Turf Facility.
