COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With a pair of victories over top 10 teams in the past week, the Maryland field hockey squad (7-1, 1-0 ACC) took over the top spot in the second STX/NFHCA Poll of the 2001 season. The Terrapins, who were ranked third in the prior vote of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, take over the No. 1 ranking for the first time since Oct. 17, 2000.
All five ACC field hockey schools rank in the top 20, with 2000 national finalist North Carolina (6-1) listed No. 2. Joining the top-ranked Terps and No. 2 Tar Heels in the top 10 are No. 8 Wake Forest (3-3) and No. 10 Duke, which owns a 5-2 record. Virginia (4-2) is ranked 11th according to this week's vote.
Including a Sept.17 win over No. 6 Michigan State and a Sept. 22 victory over then-No. 7 Wake Forest, Maryland plays a total of 11 regular season matches against teams listed in this week's top 20. Maryland meets No. 5 Princeton this Friday, Sept. 28, and ACC rival and No. 11 Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 30.
