COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's golf team opens its 2001 fall season in Myrtle Beach, S.C., as one of 32 schools competing in the Unlimited Potential/Bay Tree Classic. The Terrapins have begun their fall season every year with a trip to the event, hosted by the College of Charleston, since the program's inception in the fall of 1999. The site of the 2001 event is the par 72, 5,970-yard Bay Tree Silver and Green courses.
* The Terrapins improved 10 places from their 1999 debut at the Bay Tree Classic with a 13th place finish last fall. Leading the way for the Terps was then-freshman Kara Gropler's (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) 22nd-place score of 231 (74-75-82--231) for the three-day event.
* Maryland's 2000 three-day team-total of 939 was 32 stokes shy of Kent State's championship score of 907. The top three teams from last fall's event, Kent State, Penn State and Louisville, are not among the competitors this year.
Terps At A Glance
* Head coach Jason Rodenhaver, who built the women's golf program from the ground up in 1999, has seen his squad steadily improve since its inception at Maryland three years ago. The Terps look to continue their success this fall with the return of eight letterwinners and the arrival of one outstanding freshman.
* The most consistent of the Terps last spring was Marie Harper (West Point, Va.), who posted a 78.92 stroke average across five tournaments. Her best finish, a sixth-place tying 152 (78-74--152), helped the Terrapins to the first-ever tournament championship in program history at the James Madison Lady Dukes Invitational on April 7-8.
* Junior Carter Crowther (Kilmamock, Va.) registered a 79.80 average in two tournaments last spring after being sidelined by mononucleosis. Certainly one of the most promising golfers headed into 2001, Crowther's recovery was evident when she fired the first eagle in program history at the JMU Invitational.
* Erin Clasper (Potomac, Md.), Katie Redeker (Pepper Pike, Ohio), Kara Gropler and Jennifer Gibson (Havertown, Pa.) also return after making solid contributions last spring. Clasper's 79.90 average over four tournaments was second on the squad.
Summer Success
* Junior Carter Crowther's medalist finish at the Virginia State Golf Association Tournament was among several strong summer performances by the Terps.
* Erin Clasper and Jennifer Gibson finished No. 2 and No. 3 at the Collegiate Players Tournament outside of Atlanta.
