SAN MARCOS, TEXAS- The Maryland women's volleyball team cruised to its first win of the season Friday evening by downing Southwest Texas 30-19, 30-15, 30-27, in the first day of play at the B&G Properties Invitational. The win was a special one for the Terrapins as head coach Janice Kruger tallied her 600th win at a four-year NCAA school. After 352 victories over her nine-year stint at Nebraska-Omaha, Kruger recorded win No. 248 of her Maryland coaching career Friday night over the Bobcats.
Leading the way for the Terrapins was sophomore right side Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.). Jones, who has battled nagging injuries throughout the preseason, came up big with a career-best 15 kills to pace the Terrapin attack. Jones also contributed two blocks as Maryland had nine as a team while limiting Southwest Texas to just three blocks.
Maryland used a balanced attack as two other players just missed earning double-digit kills. Junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) totaled nine kills and a team-high seven digs along with two blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Maria DiLivio chipped in with eight kills and four digs to help spearhead an offensive attack that hit .302 as a team while holding the host Bobcats to a .111 attack percentage.
The victory improves the Terrapins to 1-3 on the young season while Southwest Texas falls to 1-4. The Terps continue play tomorrow in the final day of the B&G Properties Invitational with two matches. Providence is first up for the Terps at 10 a.m. CT while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi awaits at 5 p.m. CT.
