GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland forward Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) was named ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office. The sophomore, who claims the league honor for the second time this season, lifted the Terps to a 3-2 overtime ACC victory over Virginia on Sunday, Oct. 6.
Barbieri, who was named the ACC's Rookie of the Year in 2001, scored the game-winning goal toward the end of the first overtime period in Charlottesville. She was also credited an assist on senior Carissa Messimer's (Mountaintop, Pa.) goal that gave the No. 1 Terps (11-1, 1-1 ACC) their first lead of the game at 1-0 in the opening period.
Barbieri, who also earned Player of the Week honors twice as a freshman, earned her first conference award of this year after scoring nine points in the Terps' opening weekend. She currently leads the squad and the conference with 10 goals and 24 points.
The Terrapins led all ACC schools with five player of the week honors a season ago while claiming Maryland's fourth straight conference title and marching all the way to the NCAA championship game. Barbieri and then-senior Autumn Welsh each earned weekly conference honors twice, in addition to a one-time selection for then-senior Dina Rizzo.
Barbieri and the Terps play a pair of games this weekend at Maryland's Artificial Turf Facility. The Terrapins take on No. 12 Duke on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m., looking to earn another ACC victory. First-time opponent Davidson then comes to town on Sunday, Oct. 13, also at 1 p.m.
