Maryland junior outside hitter Lynnsy Jones drilled a match-high 20 kills and hit .326 in leading the Terrapins to a 3-0 (30-28, 31-29, 30-22) victory over Virginia in Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball action Tuesday evening at University Hall. With the win, Maryland improved to 13-7 (2-3 ACC) while the Cavaliers fell to 6-14 (0-5 ACC).
In addition to Jones' outstanding performance, the Terrapins' Carey Brennan had an excellent outing with 11 kills, a match-best 17 digs and three blocks. Setter Lindsay Davey dished out a match-high 46 assists and also tallied five digs.
The Terrapins held a 51-41 advantage in kills and a 10-6 edge in team blocks.
The match was close throughout as neither team held more than a four point lead until late in the third and final game. In the first game, the score was tied on 19 different occasions, including from 19 to 28. A kill by Brennan gave Maryland the lead for good, 29-28, and a UVa hitting error made the final score 30-28.
In the second game, the Terrapins opened up a 25-21 lead and after a Virginia timeout, the Cavaliers scored the next four points to tie the game at 25-25. With the game knotted a 28-28, Maryland's Jennifer Dewalt notched back-to-back kills to lift the Terps to a 30-28 win.
In the third and final game, UVa jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Maryland clawed back to take a 9-8 advantage. The third game remained close early on and the Cavaliers eventually took an 18-16 lead. The Terrapins scored the next four points to take the lead for good, 20-18 and went on to the 30-22 victory.
Maryland travels to Florida State on Saturday, Oct. 12 to battle the Seminoles at 7 p.m.
