In a battle of ACC foes, the Florida State Seminoles defeated the Maryland Terrapins 3-1, Saturday afternoon.
Florida State jumped out to an early lead taking game one 30-25. The Seminoles outlasted a late Maryland charge that evened the score at 23 before taking seven of the last nine points.
The Terps, led by junior Lynnsy Jones, dominated Florida State in game two. Jones' four kills and three service aces were the spark to a 9-0 Terp run in the middle of the game, which sealed it for them. Carey Brennan also put forth a strong effort with a service aces, and three kills without an error. Maryland won 30-20.
Games three and four, the Terps played close, but could not get over the hump. Both games were neck and neck, with neither team being able to jump out to any major lead. Aisha Carr was the spark for the Seminoles. Her seven kills and 10 blocks paved the way for the Florida State victory. As a team, Florida State out blocked the Terps 17.0 to 8.0. In game three, the Terps fell 30-23, and in game four they lost 30-27.
For Maryland, Lindsay Davey put in another strong performance posting her second consecutive 50 assist game. Along with her 50 assists, she had eight digs, as well as an assisted block. Freshman Rachel Wagener also played well, posting eight kills on her way to a .600 hitting percentage for the match, and four blocks. Jones finished with four service aces on the match as well as 15 kills.
Maryland fell to 16-11, 5-7 in the ACC, while Florida State improved to 17-8, 8-3 in the conference. Maryland will be in action next, Sunday November 3, at 3:00 against the Blue Devils of Duke.
