The sixth-seeded Maryland Terrapins were defeated by the third-seeded Duke Blue Devils, 30-28, 30-22, 30-22, in quarterfinal action of the ACC Championships, Friday at O'Keefe Gymnasium in Atlanta, Ga.
This loss was the third for Maryland on the season against Duke, and was the most lopsided. In the previous two matches against the Blue Devils, the Terps played close forcing five games in each match.
Game one was a tough defensive matchup, as the Terps could not finish off a late game run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Blue Devils Josie Weymann had eight digs as she led the Blue Devils to victory.
Games two and three were similar in that the Terps were felled by poor hitting. In game two the Terps hit .096 compared to the Blue Devils .283 hitting percentage. Game three held much of the same as the Terps could only muster a .067 hitting percentage. Duke won both games by a 30-22 score.
Maryland was led by senior Carey Brennan who recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs, and freshman Rachel Wagener chipped in with three block assists.
The loss drops Maryland to 18-14 on the season while Duke improves to 24-8. Duke will continue on in the ACC Championship tomorrow against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the semifinal.
In other ACC Championship action Friday, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 3-0, the North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 3-1, and the Clemson Tigers were defeated in five games by the Florida State Seminoles.
