The Maryland Terrapins defeated the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday night, 30-18, 30-28, and 30-22 on senior night at Ritchie Coliseum.
In the last volleyball match to be held at Ritchie Coliseum, the Terps led by Carey Brennan's 17 kills, Amanda Ayres' .600 hitting percentage, and Lindsay Davey's 42 assists sealed the victory. Brennan finished the match with just two errors to go along with her 17 kills, nine digs and a service ace. Ayres finished with 10 kills and just one error as well as nine digs, and a service ace. Davey finished with three kills, eight digs, and a service ace.
As a team, the Terps outplayed Virginia in all facets of the game. In each of the three games, the Terps outhit the Cavaliers by an average of .233 percentage points. Maryland's 54 kills was almost 30 more than the Cavaliers had for the match. Individually, the Cavaliers did not have a single player in double digits in the kill column while the Terps had three.
In game one, the seniors took over. Both Brennan and Ayres posted five kills on six attempts and no errors, while Davey set up 16 points. The Terps jumped out to a 26-12 lead before the Cavaliers came roaring back. The Cavilers cut the lead to 28-18 before Amanda Ayres recorded her fifth kill of the game to ensure the game one win for the Terps.
Game two, held much the same as game one. Brennan was quite impressive knotching eight kills and just one error. Her .412 hitting percentage was challenged only by fellow senior, Ayres. Ayres recorded three kills in only five attempts. Davey duplicated her game one output of 16 assists in game two as well. With the score 23-18, Ayres and Davey came up with a huge block that seemingly turned the momentum of the game. After a run of Virginia points that gave them their only lead of the match, Brennan recorded three kills in the Terps final five points to once again secure the win.
Lynnsy Jones also played well in the match. A service ace near the end of game three was the nail in the coffin for the Cavaliers. Game three saw a dominating performance by the Terps as a team, tallying a .389 hitting percentage. The point following Jones' ace, Davey recorded her thrid kill of the game pushing the Terps out to a 28-20 lead. Ayres recorded the 29th point of the game, and after a dig by Ayres, a set by Davey, and an attack by Brennan, Virginia recorded an error to end the match.
Maryland improved to 17-12, 6-8 in the ACC, while Virginia fell to 7-23 on the season, 1-13 in the ACC.
