Ludwig, Mahar Named To NSCAA All Mid-Atlantic Region Team

Dec. 3, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A pair of Maryland women's soccer players were named to the NSCAA All Mid-Atlantic Region Team on Tuesday as junior forward Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) was named to the second team and freshman midfielder Mallory Mahar (Medina, Ohio) was selected to the third team.

Mahar was also named as one of 12 finalists for Soccer Buzz's National Freshman of the Year. The national winner will be announced in late December after a vote by Division I coaches.

Ludwig, who was also named to the All-ACC first team, had a sensational season in which she made a triumphant return to playing forward after playing on defense last season. Ludwig had six goals and four assists for 16 points this season to rank third on the club in both goals and scoring. She was a key to the Terps late-season run in which they went 4-1-1 in their last regular-season six matches. She was also named to the 2002 Maryland FILA/Classic All-Tournament team.

Mahar has had a decorated freshman season as she was named to the All-ACC second team and the ACC All-Freshman team . She was a total team player in her first collegiate season in moving between defense and midfield. She was a force with her heading ability scoring all five of her goals on headers in the box. She notched a total of 12 points and started 21 of 22 matches in 2002. She was second on the club in shots with 57.
