COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland head field hockey coach and NFHCA National Coach of the Year Missy Meharg announced the signing of Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del./The Tatnall School), to a national letter of intent for fall 2002. Ciconte, who will graduate from Meharg's high school alma mater in June, becomes the third standout to date that has committed to join the ACC champion and NCAA finalist Terrapins for the upcoming season.
Ciconte, who played for Meharg's high school coach Anita Marcial at The Tatnall School in Wilmington, Del., joins incoming high school All-Americans Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon High School) as a part of the Terps' recruiting class.
"Jackie is a very feisty, aggressive, multi-talented athlete who has the potential to develop into an elite attacker," stated Meharg. "It's an honor to have Jackie, and her parents, Ed and Diane, as a part of the Maryland family."
An athlete who developed skills in many sports, Ciconte was a member of the Hornets' field hockey, basketball and lacrosse teams. In field hockey Ciconte merited first team all-state honors twice and was named a 2001 regional All-American. She garnered all-conference accolades three times and finished her senior season as the captain of her squad and the team's leading scorer.
In addition to her sports successes with the Hornets, Ciconte played squash at the national level and is also an accomplished golfer.
Meharg welcomes her new recruiting class to a 2001 squad that posted a 20-4 record, captured its fourth-straight ACC title and made its third-consecutive national semifinal appearance.
