COLLEGE PARK, Md. - NFHCA first team high school All-Americans and 2001 U.S. Under-19 teammates Lauren Powley and Tiffany Marsh are the first additions to Missy Meharg's 2002 Maryland field hockey squad, announced Wednesday. Powley, a standout defensive midfielder, and Marsh, an acclaimed forward, have signed national letters of intent to enroll at Maryland and join the Terrapins on the turf this fall. The defensive/offensive duo is added to a squad that posted a 20-4 record en route to its fourth-consecutive ACC title and a trip to the NCAA championship game in 2001.
"Their credentials speak volumes about the high quality of hockey they play and the contributions they will make at the University of Maryland," stated Meharg, who received her fourth national coach of the year honor in 2001. "But I'm also very excited about the character and personality they both bring to the team. They both have been to Advanced Play Camp at Maryland and it has been exciting for me to have watched them develop."
Powley, a two-time high school All-American and four-time all-state selection, comes to Maryland from Mountaintop, Pa. Powley was a member of the 2001 U.S. Under-18 squad that captured the Montreal Cup and took second in the California Cup, and was recently selected to the U.S. Under-19 team. As a senior at Wyoming Seminary, the enthusiastic Powley led her squad to a 24-0-2 record and the 2001 Pennsylvania AA State Championship. She was named the Wyoming Valley Conference League MVP for the second year in a row.
"Lauren is an incredible athlete, and her positive outlook will make an immediate impact on our backfield," said Meharg.
A native of Cortland, N.Y., Marsh was a member of the 2000 U.S. Under-16 team and an alternate on the Under-18 team before being selected to the Under-19 team in January. The five-year letterwinner from Marathon high school led her team to the New York State championship in 2001 and broke the NYS Section IV and her school's all-time scoring record -- a mark previously held by former Terp and Marathon grad Carla Tagliente. Marsh was not only a 2001 first team high school All-American, but a high school academic All-American as well.
"Tiffany is a calculating forward, who impressed a lot of people with her vigilance. She was selected as an alternate to the Under-18 squad, and she kept working hard which made her stronger," said Meharg. "She has shown her willingness to make the necessary sacrifices to be a strong contributor on this team."
