COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A record-setting total of ten Maryland field hockey players were selected to the 2001 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Academic Squad, having attained a 3.3 minimum cumulative grade point average and meeting the additional criteria of either being a "starter" or "key reserve." The ten student-athletes marks the Terps' highest total ever and trailed only Bucknell (12) and Stanford (12) for the most NCAA Division I honorees in the nation.
Three-time honorees include seniors Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.), Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany), All-American and Honda Award winner Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) and junior Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.).
All-American Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) earned academic squad honors for the second time in her career after a stellar junior campaign.
Newcomers Kristen Harris (Lititz, Pa.), Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England), Lucy Morris (Victoria, Australia), redshirt freshman Courtney Thornton (Annapolis, Md.) and senior Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) were all named to the squad for the first time in their respective careers.
The ten selections to the squad best Maryland's previous record total of nine, set following the 2000 season. The academic awards come to the Terrapins after a 20-4 season and an appearance in the national finals. Maryland also captured its fourth straight ACC title last season.
